The Ersatzbaustoffverordnung: how the right grab helps grab clean recycling

January 26, 2026

Since July 2023, Germany has been subject to the Ersatzbaustoffverordnung (EBV): new legislation that imposes stricter requirements on the processing of construction and demolition waste. For companies involved in demolition and recycling, this radically changes the rules of the game. Materials must be separated much more accurately, and this must be done at the demolition site itself.

Anyone who relies on "brute force" with universal grippers will quickly reach the limits of precision, efficiency, and regulations.

EBV: stricter requirements, greater responsibility

The essence of the EBV: clean rubble is valuable, contaminated rubble costs money. Only when material flows are clearly separated can they be reused in accordance with the new standards. If rubble is contaminated with wood, plastics, or metal residues, it can no longer be used as recycling material.

This means that the better the separation on site, the higher the return. Those who do not perform well will face rejection, additional costs, and, in the worst case, legal consequences.

Waste separation starts with the right tools

To comply with the EBV, the material flow must be checked at the source, literally at the tap. This requires tools that are not only powerful but, above all, precise.

Zijtveld's sorting grapples are specially designed for these types of applications:

  • They enable selective separation of demolition material without additional crushing.
  • They offer maximum control when dismantling composite structures.
  • And they minimize contamination of material flows.

Selective demolition: from demolition hammer to surgical precision

Demolition work is no longer simply a matter of 'tearing everything down and sorting it on the ground'. The EBV requires an approach in which valuable raw materials are immediately released – pure, without any residual material.

With a grab for precision demolition, concrete, wood, and steel can be separated on site. This reduces processing costs and increases yield.

Sorting with feeling: the power of the Zijtveld sorting gripper

Our grapples combine power and control. Thanks to their unique geometry, well-designed jaws, and finely controlled hydraulics, operators can work with precision. No unnecessary force, just maximum control.

The advantages:

  • Material separation that complies with EBV requirements
  • Working efficiently within the principles of Kreislaufwirtschaft
  • Suitable for Urban Mining applications
  • Less waste, more reusable material

Ready for the next step in recycling

The demands surrounding sustainability and circular construction are only increasing. Those who anticipate this now with the right equipment will be ahead of the curve. And those who look ahead will choose grapples that can do more than just deliver brute force.

The Zijtveld sorting grab is not a demolition hammer—it is a precision instrument.
